Hobby or business

The tax distinction between an activity carried on to make a profit and one done mainly for pleasure. The IRS weighs factors such as whether it is run in a businesslike way, the time and expertise put in, and the history of income and losses. Hobby income is taxable, but under current law hobby expenses are not deductible.
