Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)

A nine-digit tax number the IRS issues, on Form W-7, to people who need a US taxpayer number but are not eligible for a Social Security number, such as a spouse without work authorization named on a joint return. It is for federal tax purposes only: it does not authorize work or qualify anyone for Social Security benefits.
