Refundable tax credit

A tax credit reduces the tax you owe dollar for dollar, unlike a deduction, which only reduces the income tax is figured on. A refundable credit is paid to you even when it is larger than your tax; a nonrefundable credit can only bring your tax down to zero. Some credits, such as the child tax credit, are partly refundable.
