GLOSSARY · INVESTING

Seed phrase (recovery phrase)

The list of words, usually 12 or 24, from which a self-custody cryptocurrency wallet's private keys are generated. Anyone who has the words can recreate the wallet on any compatible device and move the funds, and if the words and the device are both lost the funds cannot be recovered. An optional extra passphrase creates a different wallet from the same words, so heirs need both.
