Tax credit

An amount subtracted directly from the tax you owe, dollar for dollar, unlike a deduction, which only lowers taxable income and saves tax at your marginal rate. A nonrefundable credit can reduce tax to zero but no further; a refundable credit can be paid to you even when you owe nothing.
