GLOSSARY · NRI: INDIANS IN THE US

KYC (know your customer, India)

The identity and address verification Indian banks and other regulated institutions must complete before opening an account and refresh from time to time. For an NRI it usually means a passport, proof of the overseas address, a PAN or Form 60, and a tax residence self-declaration. The Reserve Bank's KYC Master Direction allows documents of NRIs and Persons of Indian Origin to be certified abroad by listed authorities such as Indian embassies, notaries and overseas bank branches. Institutions can stop operations in an account if required details are not provided.
