GLOSSARY · NRI: INDIANS IN THE US

PAN (Permanent Account Number)

The ten-character alphanumeric tax identifier issued by India's Income Tax Department (section 2(76) of the Income-tax Act, 2025). Under section 262 a person whose income exceeds the amount not chargeable to tax, or who must file a return, has to apply for one. A payer must deduct tax at source at a higher rate if the payee does not furnish a valid PAN, with limited relief for some payments to non-residents (section 397). An NRI therefore needs a PAN to avoid the higher withholding on NRO interest and to file an Indian return or claim a refund.
